Our environmental impact: shingles kept out of landfills
Falcon Green Resources has turned more than 350,000 tons of shingles into recycled asphalt shingles for hot-mix asphalt. We have been doing it since 1999, as Illinois' first shingle recycler.
Why it matters
Old roofs are a landfill problem. We make them a road material.
Disposing of asphalt shingles fills valuable landfill space, and asphalt is a limited natural resource. Since 1999, when we became the first shingle recycler in Illinois, Falcon has produced more than 350,000 tons of ground shingles for hot-mix asphalt.
That helps reduce crude oil extraction and saves landfill space. For hot-mix asphalt producers, recycled asphalt shingles (RAS) are an easy way to go green. In the mix, RAS:
- Replace virgin asphalt
- Add fiber, increasing strength
- Add high-quality trap rock, improving skid resistance
- Are not a hazardous material and need no special regulations, unlike hot liquid asphalt
- Tons of shingles ground for hot-mix asphalt
