Custom mixed aggregates made with recycled shingles

Type 1 recycled asphalt shingles blended with aggregate for driveways, road base and paved surfaces, with a Solid Base case study that held up for 20 years.

Recycled aggregate

Driveways, road base and paved surfaces built with Type 1 RAS

Falcon's custom mixed aggregates are made with Type 1 recycled asphalt shingles (RAS), mixed with aggregate for use in driveways, road base and other paved surfaces. Our Solid Base case study shows how the material performs over time.

It's one more way we keep shingles out of the landfill and turn them into useful, marketable products. Use it for:

  • Driveways
  • Road base
  • Paved surfaces

Case study

Solid Base, built with Type 1 RAS

We learned from both Solid Base sections. Here's how they were built.

What we've learned

Lessons from both Solid Base sections

It's a beneficial and marketable product, and a few lessons are worth knowing before you build.

Surface prep matters

Proper surface prep is important. Our sections started on smoothed and rolled gravel.

It needs the sun's heat

The material needs the heat from the sun to create a solid surface.

A base that lasted 20 years

The base remained successful for 20 years, and our photos were taken as late as year 18.

Flexible installation

It can be installed with other equipment, not only an asphalt paver or skid-steer.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What are custom mixed aggregates?

They're aggregates mixed with Type 1 recycled asphalt shingles (RAS) for driveways, road base and paved surfaces. Call (815) 334-8689 to talk through your project.

What is Type 1 RAS?

Type 1 RAS is one of the two kinds of recycled asphalt shingles Falcon produces. We use it in our custom mixed aggregates and Bit-Base pothole patch, while our IDOT-approved Type 2 RAS goes into hot mix asphalt. See recycled asphalt shingles.

How is the material installed?

In our Solid Base case study, the material was placed with an asphalt paver or a skid-steer, then compacted with a 20-ton vibratory roller and regular traffic. It can also be installed with other equipment.

How long does an RAS base last?

Our Solid Base sections remained successful for 20 years, and our photos were taken as late as year 18.

Does the ground need prep first?

Yes. Proper surface prep is important. Our Solid Base sections were built on smoothed and rolled gravel.

Why does the material need the sun?

Our Solid Base sections showed that the material needs the heat from the sun to create a solid surface.
